Ideally, artists should be given the freedom to create their art without borders, limitations and instructions. So, what happens when they are challenged to contain their creativity within specified dimensions? What happens when the constraint of a single non-negotiable rule – the paper or canvas size – becomes the paradox that unlocks deeper creativity?
In Project 1, 2, 3 (Dimensions Without Borders) artists were tasked to create pieces with the exact measurements of 1 x 1, 2 x 2, and 3 x 3 feet. These geometric confines levels the playing field for everyone to explore not boundaries, but possibilities. These possibilities to work within perceived limits allow the artists to shift their perspectives throughout their creative processes and still tell their stories with precision and intention.
The result is a compelling exhibition of works from various genres that demonstrate the boundlessness of imagination even within measured dimensions. While the exhibit becomes a showcase of specific sized artworks, each work still remains deeply personal while highlighting the reality of how each artist is still able to exercise creative freedom despite the perceived boundary of size. The use of these 3 consistent dimensions play into the show’s curatorial content while weaving a narrative of different styles, techniques and ideas.
